"Children need protection and exposing them to relentless junk food marketing by ruthless advertising companies is not the way to do it."
"The junk-food advertising industry is not to blame for the obesity crisis but taking the small step of banning these commercials during children's television viewing times may go a long way towards making a cultural shift in the way children view the world of food."

BRINGING OUT THE GOURMET IN YOUR KIDS
For Melbourne's Child magazine's new section called "Let's Eat", Jacqi Deighan wrote an article regarding her concerns about the unimaginative children's menus that some resturaunts offer our kids.
Here are a few excerpts from The Melbourne's Child article which explains why children's menus are not healthy:
"Kids are more sophisticated than we give them credit for and restaurants need to know they are insulting the gourmets of tomorrow by offering them the cheap and tasteless fodder of the typical kids' menu."
"We need to give kids the respect they deserve, and acknowledge that even the most intractable junk-food eaters can learn to dine well if given the chance."

In a timely Herald Sun - Health Watch interview, Jacqi Deighan was asked about her school-based seminars called: "Optimise Your Brain Power for VCE".
Here are a few excerpts from The Herald Sun article which explain how eating well can help boost young people's IQ by up to 15 percent:
"What many young students don't realise is that the way they eat can undermine or enhance their study potential and affect their academic performance."
"They just don't make the connection between food and clarity of mind or strength of purpose. And a 10 or 15 per cent increase in IQ could mean the difference between getting into their chosen university course or not."

Jacqi gave adivice on packing a 'back to the basics' lunch box.
Here are a few excerpts from the ABC FM interview:

"It's about reclaiming our roles as a parent. We have to make the choices that are right for our children and one of those choices is how we feed them."
"Don't be scared off by the thought of having to put together something elaborate - it's simply a matter of concentrating on fresh natural foods."

FIGHTING THE OBESITY EPIDEMIC

The following is a short excerpt from The Age article written by Chee Chee Leung February 26, 2005 about Southmoor's canteen the successful healthy lunch alternative pilot project that Jacqi Deighan initiated in 2004.
"...
It could be a cafe menu: frittata with potato and cheese, an organic mountain bread wrap with Greek salad followed by dried fruit and nuts on a bed of coconut.
But this is the tuckshop tucker at Southmoor Primary School, where pies and canned drinks have been ditched in favour of healthy alternatives.
With Australian childhood obesity increasing, this Moorabbin school is one of many across Victoria trying to make their canteen food healthier" Read more... (if above linked page not available - click here)
JURY SAYS JUNK FOOD ADS GUILTY
As a founding member of the Parents Jury, Jacqi Deighan was interviewed by Fay Burstin for the Herald Sun - HealthWatch about her views on Junk Food Ads.
Because Jacqi regularly talks to parent groups about nutrition, she hears the stories first-hand about how the Junk Food Ads effect children... how the kids are attracted to the powerful ads and then pester their parents to purchase the products.
Here are a excerpts from The Herald Sun article which quote Jacqi's concerns:
"Australia has the world's highest number of junk food ads per hour during children's viewing hours.... This makes me so angry because children are such an easy target and the big food companies take advantage of that."
"I'm angry at the way they use celebrities from TV shows like Playschool, who they can identify and trust, to sell breakfast cereals full of sugar... Or the way kids' favourite cartoon characters like Shrek or Bob the Builder are plastered all over sugary fruit juices and the kids see them and say 'mum, mum, look!', or the way fast food companies sponsor activities in school. It's just so deliberate and so wrong."
"Look at kids' menus in restaurants and they're full of junk food like chicken nuggets, chips and pizza... Children are treated as second-class citizens in restaurants and no one even questions it."
